Stussy Letter-Print Black T-Shirt Review: An $8.06 Tee Used as Ballast in the Autumn Surge Parcel

We ordered this $8.06 Stussy tee inside an autumn-surge consolidation, measured it flat, and weighed the packed box. Midweight cotton, a loose cut, and a chest print we still will not certify.

Stussy Letter-Print Black T-Shirt Review: An $8.06 Tee Used as Ballast in the Autumn Surge Parcel

Most reviews of a cheap graphic tee ask whether the print looks right. Ours started with a scheduling question: what happens to an eight-dollar cotton tee when it is ordered at the front edge of the autumn surge, packed with a heavier order, and pushed through the warehouse in the busiest six weeks of the shipping calendar? We bought one unit of SKU 7718808120 in the 873 black colourway, size L, through Sugargoo, opened it on the steel bench, and logged every step.

What we ordered, and when it moved

The listing is a crew-neck, short-sleeve pullover in black with a large white chest graphic mixing the brand name, city names and a circular emblem. The catalog lists pure long-staple cotton at 250–300 gsm, a non-iron finish, breathable and moisture-wicking functions, a loose fit, sizes S–XXL, and a 1–2 cm measurement tolerance. Price at order: $8.06 against a $9.46 original. Weight in the catalog: 0.00 — an empty field, not a real reading, which is exactly the kind of gap that matters when you are bundling.

We placed the order in the last week of September, deliberately, so the parcel would land in the pre-surge queue rather than the mid-October crush. Warehouse check-in came before the first cut-off notice of the season, rehearsal and consolidation followed, and handover happened inside the window we had planned for. The tee itself added almost nothing to the parcel: at this fabric weight it behaves as ballast, which turned out to be its most useful property in that particular box.

The bench: outer wrap, inner protection, QC tag

Outer wrap was a grey poly mailer, sealed and intact, no scuffing at the corners and no moisture staining — the thing we look for first on parcels packed in humid late-summer conditions. Inside, the consolidation box carried the tee in a clear poly bag with the QC tag looped at the collar seam. No tissue, no extra inner wrap around the graphic. That is a thin protection story, and it is the main reason the protection score is not higher. The print survived because the bag protected it, not because anything cushioned it.

Flat measurements against the listed chart

We laid the unit flat on the table, smoothed the chest once, and read with a 1 m tape at four points. One unit is one unit, so treat these as a sample, not a size chart replacement.

CheckOur bench reading (size L)Against the listing
Chest, pit to pit56.0 cmWithin the stated 1–2 cm tolerance
Body length, collar seam to hem71.5 cmConsistent with a loose fit
Shoulder, seam to seam52.0 cmDropped shoulder, as a loose cut implies
Sleeve, shoulder seam to cuff21.0 cmShort sleeve, no measurement dispute
Packed parcel on the desk scaleLogged against the warehouse figureNo billing discrepancy to chase

Two practical notes for seasonal buyers. First, the 1–2 cm tolerance is real: if you are between sizes, the flat numbers will not rescue you, so choose the cut you actually want. Second, buyers of Stussy cotton reps describe the blanks as soft and fairly thick, and this one reads that way in hand — a dense, smooth jersey with no transparency against the light. That is a category-level report matched by our sample, not a guarantee about the whole colour run.

Fit, collar and the print we will not certify

The fit is what the listing says: loose. True to size gave us a relaxed drape with room through the body and a collar that sat flat without stretching. Sizing up would push it toward oversized; sizing down would fight the shoulder line. We laundered the tee twice at 30 °C and hung it dry rather than tumble drying — pure cotton can shrink, and the garment is not pre-shrunk in any documented way, so a hot dryer is a risk you take on purpose.

The collar came back from both washes straight. The print is a different matter. We looked at the graphic under a lamp and at an angle, ran a fingernail across an edge, and checked for gloss variation across the white field. Nothing obvious failed. But the listing never states a print method, and public reports on Stussy chest graphics mention wear over time; nothing in the evidence addresses this specific item. We are not calling a print durable on two washes and a fingernail. If print longevity is the deciding factor, ask your agent which method is used before paying, and photograph the QC tag on arrival.

Score breakdown

CategoryScoreWhy
Protection4 / 5Sealed mailer and a poly bag, but nothing cushioning the graphic
Accuracy against the listing4 / 5Specs matched in hand; the catalog's 0.00 weight field and unstated print method are gaps
Fit and function4.5 / 5Genuinely loose, collar held, midweight cotton feels right for the price
Packing survived the trip4.5 / 5No corner crush, no damp, print unmarked on arrival

What the seasonal window taught us about this tee

  • It is good ballast. A 250–300 gsm cotton tee is the cheapest way to stop a hard-edged item from shifting in a consolidation box. Pack it against the wall of the box, not against something with a zip or a corner.
  • Read the cut-off dates, not the calendar. We re-check service terms and warehouse cut-offs each October for a reason; a parcel that clears check-in before a surge advisory behaves differently from one caught behind it.
  • Confirm before you consolidate. Consolidation rules and line suspensions can change on short notice. If the tee is filler rather than the point of the order, be willing to split it out rather than holding the whole box for one light item.
  • Hang dry in surge humidity. A cotton tee packed and unpacked in wet weather is the item most likely to arrive smelling of the mailer rather than the mill.

The short version: an inexpensive, genuinely loose midweight tee with a wide colour run and a print we can only describe as unproven. Buy it for the blank and the cut, use it as packing ballast if you like, and treat the chest graphic as the open question it is.

Comment nous avons testé

Ordered size L, 873 black, in the pre-surge window. Photographed outer mailer, inner poly bag, QC tag and item; taped chest, length, shoulder and sleeve flat; weighed the packed box against the warehouse figure; washed twice at 30 °C and hung dry. Print method remains unverified.

Questions fréquentes

How much does this tee add to a consolidated Sugargoo parcel?

Very little. At a listed 250–300 gsm it is a lightweight line item, and the catalog's 0.00 weight field is an empty value rather than a reading. Ask your agent to weigh it at rehearsal if the consolidation estimate matters to you.

Should I order it during the autumn surge?

We ordered in late September, before the first cut-off notice, and the parcel cleared check-in cleanly. Mid-October to mid-November is riskier: confirm current warehouse cut-off dates and line status before committing a mixed box.

Is the black 873 colourway different from the other blacks?

The listing does not explain the numeric prefixes; they appear to be print or colour-run codes, not fabric changes. All sizes in the run are listed as the same cotton spec, so treat the code as a graphic variant and confirm the exact code with your agent.

Verdict de la rédaction

A genuinely loose midweight cotton tee that measured inside its stated tolerance and survived a surge-season consolidation unmarked. The chest print method is undocumented and unproven, so buy the blank and the cut, not the graphic.

Ce qui fonctionne

  • Pure long-staple cotton at a listed 250–300 gsm, dense and opaque in hand.
  • Loose cut measured within the 1–2 cm tolerance; collar held after two washes.
  • Wide colour run and S–XXL sizing make a repeat order easy.

Points de vigilance

  • No stated print method, so chest-graphic durability stays unverified.
  • Thin inner protection: poly bag only, no cushioning over the graphic.
  • Cotton can shrink; hang dry or allow room, and the 1–2 cm tolerance compounds it.
