Foreign Trade Black Athletic Shorts Review: A $7.46 Summer SKU Held Through the Autumn Surge
We bought the $7.46 Foreign Trade shorts in shoulder season and measured them flat, weighed them packed, and watched how a cheap summer SKU behaves when storage windows and autumn cut-offs set the shipping calendar.
Published 30 October 2026 Ellis Tanaka Reviews EditorHands-on parcel preparation, protective packaging, garment fit checks, and QC photo comparisonEllis Tanaka ran the returns bench at a Portland outdoor-gear retailer for four years, which is where he learned that a photographed seam tells you more than a specification sheet. He joined the Almanac in 2020 and now runs the packing bench: weighing, rehearsing, and re-packing parcels for every hands-on review. He keeps a shelf of failed packaging — crushed corner protectors, split mailers, a box that arrived with a footprint on it — and refers to it during scoring meetings.- Who this is for
- Buyers building a consolidated parcel who want a cheap, plain black summer short in a straight mid-thigh cut and are willing to request flat measurements before shipping.
- Who should skip
- Anyone who needs documented sizing or verified durability up front, or who wants a colourway other than black confirmed by real photographs before paying.

How we tested

By Ellis Tanaka, Reviews Editor. The parcel was opened on the steel table by the window in Portland: outer wrap photographed first, then the inner protection, the QC tag, and only then the shorts themselves. Nothing was discarded until the measurement log was signed.
This pair is a $7.46 polyester short from a factory-source listing, marked down from $8.51, SKU 7720570468. It arrived in the shoulder season rather than in July, which turned out to be the more useful test: a seven-dollar summer short bought when the warehouse is filling with heavier goods has to survive a different parcel plan than one bought at the height of summer.
The four checks, and how each scored
Every parcel we open is scored on the same four dimensions. The numbers below are our desk scores out of five, not the seller's.
| Check | Score | What decided it |
|---|---|---|
| Protection | 4 / 5 | Poly bag inside a soft mailer; no rigid backing, and the waistband folded on itself in transit. Adequate for a garment at this price, thin for anything with structure. |
| Accuracy against the listing | 4 / 5 | Black colourway, straight mid-thigh cut, drawstring waist, script lettering across the front and small lower-leg patches all matched the photographs. The spec sheet contradicts itself elsewhere (see below). |
| Fit and function | 3.5 / 5 | The cut is easy and the slight stretch helps, but the listing publishes no waist, hip or inseam figures, so we had to build our own size table from one pair. |
| Packing survived the trip | 4 / 5 | One deep fold crease across the front panel that relaxed after a wash; print undamaged; no snags from the mailer edge. |
Flat measurements against a size chart that does not exist
We ordered size L and measured it flat with the tape, then stretched the drawstring waist to its comfortable limit. There is no published table to check these against, which is the single most important caveat in this review — the numbers are ours, not the seller's.
| Measurement (size L) | Ours, flat | Listing figure |
|---|---|---|
| Waist, relaxed | 39 cm | Not published |
| Waist, comfortably stretched | 46 cm | Not published |
| Front rise | 31 cm | Not published |
| Inseam | 17.5 cm | Not published |
| Hem opening, flat | 28 cm | Not published |
| Outseam | 48 cm | Not published |
| Weight, single pair | 232 g | Shipping weight field shows 0.00 |
On a 5 ft 9 in frame the hem landed roughly a hand above the knee — the "five-point" mid-thigh length the listing describes, with a straight leg that neither tapers hard nor flares. The 17.5 cm inseam is the number to compare against a pair you already own, because the difference between this and a longer short is decided in those two or three centimetres.
Parcel weight against a blank field
The listing's weight field reads 0.00, which is not a weight — it is an empty field. Our desk scale put the pair at 232 g, and the poly bag and mailer added another 41 g. In a five-item consolidated parcel the shorts contributed almost nothing to the billing weight; if anything, they were the item that absorbed an awkward gap in the carton rather than the item that drove the freight tier. Volumetric weight, not this garment, is what will decide that parcel's cost.
That makes the pre-shipment rehearsal the relevant service step rather than the shipping calculator. A rehearsal returns packed dimensions and both actual and volumetric weight for the parcel you have actually built, which is the only way to know whether a light short is filler or ballast. We paid for the simulation once the goods were in storage and the QC photos were reviewed, not before.
Buying a summer short outside summer
Seasonal timing changes what a $7.46 purchase actually is. Free storage is measured in days from warehouse receipt, not from your purchase date, and the allowance is a term to re-read rather than a fixed promise; the same is true of the cut-off dates that tighten from late September into mid-November and again around Lunar New Year, when lines are suspended on short notice.
Practical consequence: a summer short bought in the shoulder season should either ship with the parcel that is already forming, or be deliberately held and re-checked against the current terms before the autumn surge closes. Holding it through the winter to wear next June is only sensible if the storage deadline comfortably covers the wait. Ours shipped with the forming parcel rather than waiting.
Construction notes from the table
- Fabric. Polyester main fabric with slight two-way stretch, thin enough to hold a fold but opaque in black. It has a faint synthetic sheen under office light.
- Waist. Elastic with a flat drawstring; the cord ends are unsealed and will fray with washing unless knotted.
- Print and patches. The front script sits flat with a slightly raised, fused edge. The lower-leg patches are stitched on all four sides, and we found no loose thread at the hem or the crotch seam.
- Pockets. Side entry only; the seams are single-stitched, which is normal at this price and the first place we expect wear.
What the listing leaves open
Three contradictions in the spec sheet are worth knowing before checkout. The features block names a factory brand, Chensida, while the listing brand is Foreign Trade; the season appears once as summer 2025 and once as summer 2024; and four colourways are offered — white, black, orange and green — with photographs that clearly document the black pair only. Sizes run M through 3XL, but ours is the only one we measured.
Treat the colour name in the title, the size you select, and the photographs of that exact option as three separate things to confirm with the seller before the item reaches the warehouse.
None of that makes the shorts a bad buy at this price. It does mean the order has to be built on measurements you request rather than measurements you assume, and that a colour other than black is an act of trust until QC photos arrive.
How we tested
Opened on the steel table; photographed outer wrap, inner bag, QC tag and shorts. Flat-measured waist, rise, inseam, hem opening and outseam; weighed one pair at 232 g and checked the packed parcel against the warehouse figure. Scored protection, listing accuracy, fit and packing survival. Log signed 14 October.

Frequently asked
Does a $7.46 pair of shorts change what a parcel costs to ship?
Barely by weight — we measured 232 g plus 41 g of bag and mailer. Volumetric weight and the route's billing increment decide the freight tier, so request a rehearsal before assuming a light item is cheap to send.
Is it worth holding these shorts in the warehouse until next summer?
Only if the storage deadline on your actual order comfortably covers the wait, and the terms are re-read before the autumn cut-offs tighten. Otherwise ship them with the parcel already forming.
Should I order a colour other than black?
The listing offers white, orange and green, but the photographs document the black pair. Ask the seller for images of the exact option, then check the warehouse QC photos before approving the parcel.
Editor verdict
A $7.46 polyester five-point short that matches its black product photos and adds almost no parcel weight. The cut is easy and the print clean, but with no published size chart and a blank weight field, order it on measurements you request yourself.
What works
- Black colourway, script print and leg patches match the photographs
- Straight mid-thigh cut with slight stretch; 232 g per pair
- Sizes M–3XL and four listed colourways at a low unit price
Watch-outs
- No published waist, hip or inseam figures; size L measured 39 cm flat waist
- Shipping weight field reads 0.00 and only the black pair is photographed
- Spec sheet names two brands and two summer seasons

- Good honest writeup but I wish there were more photos of the inside lining. Mine came with a slightly rough waistband edge that bugs me after a few hours. Still wearable for the money.

- Shorts arrived, stitching is decent, one loose thread on the hem I trimmed off. Color is a solid deep black, not faded like some foreign trade batches. Would rebuy at this price tbh.

- This is exactly the kind of breakdown I needed. Everyone reviews hoodies in November but nobody talks about how a $7 summer SKU behaves when storage windows close. The packed-weight part saved me from guessing on my consolidation. Thank you.

- For $7.46 honestly can't complain but the fabric is thin. Fine for July, not something I'd push into October. The autumn cut-off thing in the article is real though, I waited too long last year on cheap summer stuff and my parcel sat.

- Bought two pairs after reading this. Flat measurement matched what I got, maybe 1cm off on the inseam but nothing crazy. Weighed mine packed at 214g so the shipping estimate was pretty close. Only thing is the waist runs a bit snug for a size L, size up if you're between sizes.
